Staying online in Cancun

4G LTE is strong across Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and the archaeological corridor; 5G reached Cancun and Playa del Carmen in 2024 but is still uneven inland toward Valladolid and Merida. Roaming from EU / UK is expensive without an eSIM. US carriers with 'Mexico included' plans (T-Mobile Magenta, Verizon Unlimited) work seamlessly.

The eSIM route (recommended for most visitors)

Best provider
Airalo (Telcel backbone) or Holafly.
Typical pricing
Airalo: $5 for 1GB / 7 days, $14 for 5GB / 30 days. Holafly: $19 unlimited / 5 days, $47 unlimited / 15 days.

Telcel has the strongest coverage on the Yucatan Peninsula, including at cenotes and inland archaeological sites. Movistar and AT&T Mexico are fine along the coast but drop off inland. Pick a Telcel-backed eSIM for the Riviera Maya.

The local SIM route

Operators worth using
Telcel (best coverage), AT&T Mexico, Movistar.
Where to buy
OXXO convenience stores stock Telcel Amigo SIMs — 150-200 MXN for the SIM + 300-500 MXN for 30 days of data. Telcel branded stores in Cancun malls activate on the spot with passport.
Registration
Passport required. OXXO staff will not always activate; go to a Telcel store or use eSIM for hassle-free activation.

Public WiFi

Hotels, resorts, and airports have reliable WiFi. Public plazas in El Centro often have free municipal WiFi. Beach clubs on the Hotel Zone provide WiFi for customers. Cenotes and archaeological sites are dead zones — download offline maps beforehand.

Network speeds you'll actually see

5G in Cancun + Playa del Carmen: 100-400 Mbps real-world. 4G elsewhere on the coast: 20-80 Mbps. Inland toward Chichen Itza and Valladolid: 5-30 Mbps, occasionally 2G-only at remote cenotes.

Local apps to install before you arrive

  • Uber + DiDi — both work in Cancun; DiDi is usually cheaper. Neither runs in the Hotel Zone taxi cartel-controlled areas; you'll need a licensed taxi from resort entrances

  • Rappi — food delivery + convenience run errands

  • ADO — official bus app for Cancun ⇄ Playa del Carmen ⇄ Tulum ⇄ Merida routes

  • Google Maps — reliable for driving; download offline maps for the Yucatan interior

  • WhatsApp — the universal message app; used for restaurant bookings and tour operators
