Greek Island Hopping 2026: A Party-Goer's Itinerary

Three Greek island-hopping itineraries, of 7, 10 and 12 days, around Mykonos, Ios, Santorini and Naxos, with ferry times and fares checked against the timetables, and how to pace the party side.

Checked Research-led

The short version

  • Two to four islands in 7 to 12 days. Put a calmer island in the middle of a party trip.
  • Book the ferries early. Ferryhopper says Athens–Santorini tickets "can sell out fast during the high season", and it advises booking Athens–Milos three to four months ahead for summer.
  • Fast ferries from Piraeus take 2h 40 to Mykonos, 3h 25 to Naxos, 4h 15 to Ios and about 5 hours to Santorini. Conventional ferries take roughly 1.2 to 2 times as long, for about half the fare.
  • The 10-day trip has four ferry legs: about €175 at the cheapest fares we found in October 2026, or roughly €300–350 if every leg is a fast ferry.

Island hopping goes wrong in predictable ways: too many islands, ferries booked late, and a party every night until the trip blurs. These itineraries are built to avoid that, with the ferry times and fares checked against the timetables.

The islands, in a line each

  • Mykonos: the beach-club island. "The Paradise and Super Paradise beach bars have defined the Mykonos legend since the 1970s," says Greece's official tourism site. Our Mykonos beach clubs guide covers the clubs.
  • Ios: the young party island. The bars are in Chora, the hilltop village above the port, not on the harbour.
  • Santorini: the caldera and its sunset. The late nights are in Fira, where 2 Brothers has DJs until 5am. Our Santorini guide has the sunset times and the bars.
  • Naxos: the largest and most fertile of the Cyclades, with a Venetian castle above Chora, the Portara of Apollo, Halki village inland, and beaches from Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna to Plaka.
  • Paros: 45 minutes from Mykonos by fast catamaran.
  • Milos: out in the western Cyclades. SeaJets and Fast Ferries sail direct between Milos and Santorini.

Itinerary 1: party first (7 days)

  • Days 1–2: Athens. Land, and a night out in the city.
  • Days 3–4: Mykonos. Two beach-club days.
  • Days 5–6: Ios. Beach days, and nights in Chora. Mykonos to Ios is about 1h 25 on the fastest sailing, nearer 2 hours on others.
  • Day 7: ferry back to Athens, a night there, and fly home the next morning.

It works if everyone in the group wants a party trip. There's no quiet day in it.

Itinerary 2: balanced (10 days)

  • Days 1–2: Athens.
  • Days 3–5: Mykonos. Two beach-club days and a quiet beach day on the north coast.
  • Days 6–7: Santorini. Sunset, dinner and a night in Fira.
  • Days 8–9: Naxos. The castle, the Portara, inland to Halki, a swim at Plaka.
  • Day 10: ferry back to Athens, a night there, and fly home the next morning.

One party island, one view island and one calm one. This is the one to start from.

Itinerary 3: the quieter route (12 days)

  • Days 1–2: Athens.
  • Days 3–5: Naxos.
  • Days 6–7: Paros.
  • Days 8–10: Milos. Check the sailings from Paros before you book this leg.
  • Days 11–12: Santorini, by direct ferry from Milos, for a night of sunset and dinner, then fly home. In summer there are direct flights from other European cities to Santorini.

This trip trades the big party nights for beaches and food.

Ferries: what matters

Book early

Ferryhopper says tickets on routes such as Athens–Santorini, Rafina–Mykonos and Santorini–Mykonos can sell out fast in high season, and it advises booking Athens–Milos three to four months ahead for summer. Book every leg as soon as the sailings for your dates are out.

Where to book

Ferryhopper puts "all ferry companies on a single platform", which is the quickest way to compare sailings. The operators (Blue Star, SeaJets, Golden Star and others) sell on their own sites too.

Fast or conventional

Fast ferries are quicker; conventional ferries (Blue Star, ANEK) take roughly 1.2 to 2 times as long, for about half the fare. The gap depends on the route: Piraeus to Mykonos is 2h 40 by fast ferry against 5h 10 on Blue Star, but Piraeus to Santorini is about 5 hours against 6h 06.

Leave a gap

Blue Star asks passengers to be at the port at least an hour before departure, so leave more than that between an arrival and an onward ferry. And don't book a flight home on the day of the ferry back to Athens: stay a night in the city.

Wind and cancelled sailings

The meltemi is the Cyclades' summer wind, and Ferryhopper warns that Piraeus–Ios sailings "can be affected by strong winds, especially in July and August". Sailings can be cancelled for bad weather, so build a spare day into the trip: then a cancellation costs you a day, not the itinerary.

What it costs

Ferries. The 10-day trip has four legs: Athens to Mykonos, Mykonos to Santorini, Santorini to Naxos and Naxos to Athens. On Ferryhopper in October 2026 the cheapest fares started from €43, €58, €31 and €42, about €175 in all. With every leg on a fast ferry, it's roughly €300–350. Check the fares for your own dates.

Beach clubs. Most Mykonos clubs don't publish their prices outside their booking systems. The exception is Paradise Beach Club, where entry is free and tables start at a €250 minimum spend on its 2026 price list.

Where to stay

  • Mykonos: Agios Ioannis is the quiet option; Ornos and Platys Gialos are busier beach resorts. All three are under 10 minutes' drive from the old port.
  • Ios: Chora, for the bars, or Mylopotas beach.
  • Santorini: Imerovigli or Firostefani, on the caldera clifftops, for the sunset. For a beach stay, Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios form what the official tourism site calls "an expansive five-kilometre stretch of black sand, replete with beach bars".
  • Naxos: Chora, the port town, or one of the beach villages: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna or Plaka.

Day by day: the 10-day trip

Day 1: arrive in Athens. Dinner in Psyrri, and a drink at The Clumsies.

Day 2: the Acropolis in the morning, Monastiraki's flea market in the afternoon, Gazi at night.

Day 3: fast ferry to Mykonos, 2h 40 from Piraeus. Lunch at Alemagou, the all-day beach bar and restaurant on Ftelia beach, then a swim and a walk round town.

Day 4: Scorpios. Arrive in the afternoon for the music sessions on the terrace, which start at 5pm in season, and stay for dinner: the restaurant runs to midnight.

Day 5: a quiet north-coast beach. Greece's official tourism site says Mersini and Fokos "are beloved by those who cherish silence". Then an early dinner in town, and a cocktail at Semeli in Little Venice.

Day 6: fast ferry to Santorini, 2h 10 to 2h 50 depending on the operator. Check in at Imerovigli and watch the sunset from the caldera.

Day 7: the south of the island: Akrotiri, then the black sand at Perissa and Perivolos. Back to Fira for dinner and a cocktail at Tango.

Day 8: ferry to Naxos: 1h 15 by fast ferry, about 2 hours on Blue Star. Walk up to the castle, and out to the Portara.

Day 9: inland to Halki, then a swim at Plaka.

Day 10: ferry back to Piraeus: 3h 25 by fast ferry, 5h 35 on Blue Star. A night in Athens, and fly home the next morning.

Sailing times are from the October 2026 timetables. Check the sailings for your own dates when you book.

What to skip

  • More islands than days allow. Fewer than two nights in a place and you spend the trip packing and on ferries.
  • A party every night. Put the quiet island in the middle.
  • Expecting Santorini to party like Mykonos. Santorini has late nights in Fira, but no beach-club scene to match Mykonos's.
  • A flight home on the day of the last ferry. Stay a night in Athens.

Questions

How many Greek islands should I visit in 10 days?

Two or three. A balanced trip is Mykonos (three nights), Santorini (two) and a calmer third island such as Naxos (two), with a night or two in Athens at each end.

How long are the ferries from Athens?

By fast ferry from Piraeus: 2h 40 to Mykonos or Paros, 3h 25 to Naxos, 4h 15 to Ios and about 5 hours to Santorini. Blue Star's conventional ferries take from 4h 10 (Paros) to 6h 45 (Ios).

When is the best time to go island hopping in Greece?

July and August are the peak, and the meltemi wind can disrupt sailings then. Average July and August highs are about 27°C on Naxos and about 32°C in Athens, by the Greek weather service's figures, and heatwaves push them higher. By early October the beach clubs are closing: SantAnna usually runs to September, and Scorpios's last night of 2026 was 4 October.

How do I book Greek island ferries?

Ferryhopper shows every operator's sailings in one place, and the operators sell on their own sites too. Book as soon as the sailings for your dates are out: Ferryhopper says routes such as Athens–Santorini can sell out fast in high season.

Which Greek island is best for nightlife?

Mykonos for beach clubs and DJs. Ios for a young party crowd, in the bars of Chora. Santorini for cocktail bars and a few late nights in Fira. Naxos, Paros and Milos are for quieter evenings.

One last thing

A good Greek summer can be nine days and three islands, one of them somewhere you'd never heard of: Schinoussa, say, in the Small Cyclades with Iraklia, Donousa and Koufonisia. Party hard for two days, then sit somewhere quiet with a Greek salad. That's the rhythm.

Corrections

  • : Re-checked against the ferry timetables and rewritten. Removed the out-of-ten party scores, which had no published method. Ios’s nightlife is in Chora, not on the harbour. Chania is 8 to 9½ hours overnight from Piraeus, not 8, and Paros 2 hours 40 by fast ferry. Conventional ferries take roughly 1.2 to 2 times as long as fast ones, not always twice. The 10-day trip has four ferry legs, not six: about €175 at the cheapest fares we found, or €300–350 all by fast ferry. Agios Ioannis is the quiet Mykonos base; Ornos and Platys Gialos are busy beach resorts. Santorini has a few late venues in Fira. Average July and August highs on the islands are about 27°C, not 35°C+. Removed the day-by-day sailing times, which no current timetable matches, the rest of the trip budget, and booking lead times no source states: Ferryhopper advises booking some routes months, not weeks, ahead.
  • : High-speed ferry times from Athens corrected: Ios 4h15, Santorini 5h, Paros 2h45. The itineraries now stay a night in Athens before the flight home, as the guide itself advises. Mykonos has no caldera. The Santorini car advice now matches the other Greece guides: skip the car.
  • : Removed lines written in the voice of a hotel owner (“our last-stop hotel”) and a first-person account of an island-hopping trip: the guide is research-led. Removed a quote credited to “a hotelier in Naoussa”, an unnamed source that couldn’t be checked, and a closing line about booking direct through the site, which Citorah doesn’t offer.
