Mykonos vs Santorini vs Ios 2026: Which Greek Island?

A straight comparison of the three best-known Greek party islands: who each is for, how they connect, and how to pick.

Checked Research-led

The short version

  • Mykonos: the beach-club island. Big-name DJs, a whitewashed old town, designer shops, and prices to match.
  • Santorini: the view-and-dinner island. Sunset over the caldera and long dinners; nightlife is mostly bars, with a few late venues in Fira.
  • Ios: the young party island. The bars are in Chora, the hilltop village above the port.
  • Pick two at most. Mykonos to Santorini is 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes by fast ferry, depending on the operator; Santorini to Ios is 35 to 45 minutes.

"Mykonos or Santorini?" is the question most Greek summers start with, and Ios is the third name that comes up. All three are in the Cyclades, all three are worth the trip, and they're very different places.

The one-sentence sort

  • A luxury beach-club trip: Mykonos.
  • A honeymoon, a special occasion or a view-first holiday: Santorini.
  • A young, budget, party-first week: Ios.
  • Some of each: pick two and split the trip.

Mykonos

Mykonos is for beach clubs, bars and shopping in a whitewashed old town. Its beach clubs (Scorpios, Nammos, SantAnna, Super Paradise) are the reason most people go, and the island is priced for that crowd. Our Mykonos beach clubs guide has what each club is for and how to book.

Mykonos works if you want at least one big beach-club day and you've budgeted for it. It doesn't work on a tight budget, or if what you want is a quiet island.

Santorini

Santorini is the view: the caldera, and the sunset over it. The black-sand beaches (Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios) are on the other side of the island, and caldera villages such as Imerovigli are reached on stone paths, so check access before you book if steps are a problem.

Nightlife is mostly bars, but not only: in Fira, 2 Brothers has DJs every night from 10pm to 5am in season.

Santorini works for couples and for a trip built around dinners and views. It doesn't work if you want a beach island on your doorstep, or a big party scene.

Ios

Ios is the young party island. Its bars and clubs are in Chora, the hilltop village above the port, not on the harbour. Go with a group that wants to party; it's the wrong island for anyone who doesn't.

Combining: which pairs work

  • Mykonos + Santorini: 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes by fast ferry. The classic pairing, for a trip where one of you wants beach clubs and the other wants the view.
  • Mykonos + Ios: about 1 hour 25 minutes on the fastest sailing, nearer 2 hours on others. The party pairing.
  • Santorini + Ios: 35 to 45 minutes. Calmer, then louder.
  • All three: only with ten days or more, or you'll spend the trip on ferries.

For most trips, two islands is plenty, with a night in Athens at either end.

A quieter third island

If you have ten days or more, make the extra stop a quiet one:

  • Naxos: the largest of the Cyclades, 40 to 50 minutes from Mykonos by fast catamaran.
  • Paros: 45 minutes from Mykonos by fast ferry.
  • Milos: further out; check sailings from your other islands before you plan it in.

The heat

Mykonos's average July and August highs were about 29–31°C in 2023–25, by the Greek weather service's monthly figures. Heatwaves push it higher, so plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon, and keep the middle of the day for lunch and shade.

Questions

Is Mykonos or Santorini better for a first trip to Greece?

For a couples' trip or a honeymoon, Santorini. For a party-first trip with friends, Mykonos. They're 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes apart by fast ferry, so a week can include both.

Does Santorini have nightlife?

Some. It's mostly bars, but Fira has late venues: 2 Brothers has DJs every night from 10pm to 5am in season.

Where is the party on Ios?

In Chora, the hilltop village above the port, not on the harbour.

How do I get to Ios?

By ferry: there's no airport. From Piraeus, SeaJets' fast ferry takes 4 hours 15 minutes and Blue Star's conventional ferry 6 hours 45 minutes; Golden Star's fast ferry from Rafina takes about 4 and a half hours. From Santorini it's 35 to 45 minutes.

Can I do Mykonos, Santorini and Ios in one week?

You can, but you'll spend most of it on ferries. Give all three ten days or more, or pick two.

What to skip

  • One-night stops. You barely unpack before the next ferry.
  • Ios with people who don't want to party. Nothing about the island is set up for them.
  • Planning around winter. These are summer islands, and many venues close for the season. If you're going to Mykonos in winter, its airport is closed every Thursday from 19 November 2026 to 18 March 2027 for runway works.

Corrections

  • : Re-checked and rewritten. Removed the out-of-ten scores, which had no published method behind them. Ios’s bars are in Chora, the hilltop village above the port, not on the harbour. Santorini has a few late venues in Fira, such as 2 Brothers, with DJs until 5 AM. Paros is 45 minutes from Mykonos by fast ferry, not 2 hours, and Naxos 40–50 minutes. Mykonos to Santorini is 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes by fast ferry, and the Piraeus fast ferry to Mykonos takes 2 hours 40 minutes. Blue Star’s conventional ferry to Santorini takes from 6 hours 6 minutes, not 8. Mykonos’s average July and August highs were about 29–31°C in 2023–25: 35°C+ comes with heatwaves, not every summer.
  • : Ferry times corrected from the operators' timetables: Mykonos to Santorini is 2 to 3.5 hours, not 4 to 5; Mykonos to Ios about 1.5 hours; Santorini to Ios 35 to 75 minutes; Naxos 35 minutes to 2 hours; and by high-speed from Piraeus, Mykonos 2h45, Santorini 5h and Ios 4h15.
  • : Removed first-person claims about having done every combination of the three islands: the guide is research-led. Removed a quote credited to “an islands PR veteran”, an unnamed source that couldn’t be checked, and a closing line about booking direct through the site, which Citorah doesn’t offer.
