The short version
- Sunset moves a long way through the season: about 8.40pm at the start of July, 8.10pm in mid-August and 7pm by the end of September. Plan the evening around the date.
- Oia is the famous view. Imerovigli, Ammoudi Bay below Oia, the Prophitis Ilias monastery and the Akrotiri lighthouse are the alternatives.
- Fira is the night-out town: PK and Tango on the cliffside, then 2 Brothers, with DJs from 10pm to 5am.
- July and August are the peak. Several of the restaurants here run only from April to October, so check dates if you're going early or late in the year.
Santorini's evenings are built around the sunset over the caldera. This guide covers when it happens, where to watch it, where to drink in Fira afterwards, and the dinners worth booking.
When the sun sets
The time changes by more than an hour and a half between June and the end of September, so "8.30pm" only works for part of the summer.
| Date | Sunset in Oia |
|---|---|
| 15 June | 8.38pm |
| 1 July | 8.41pm |
| 15 July | 8.37pm |
| 31 July | 8.25pm |
| 15 August | 8.09pm |
| 31 August | 7.48pm |
| 15 September | 7.26pm |
| 30 September | 7.04pm |

Where to watch it
Oia, on the northern tip of the island, is the famous view. These are the alternatives:
| Where | What it is |
|---|---|
| Imerovigli | A caldera village about 2 km north of Fira, looking out to Skaros Rock |
| Ammoudi Bay | A small fishing port about 300 steps below Oia, for a fish dinner by the water |
| Prophitis Ilias monastery | On the island's highest peak, inland |
| Akrotiri lighthouse | At the south-western tip of the island |
| Fira's cliffside bars | The caldera view with a drink in hand: PK and Tango |
If you go down to Ammoudi, walk the steps rather than taking a donkey or mule. The Donkey Sanctuary's In Their Hooves campaign asks visitors to stop and think before taking those rides on Santorini.
Fira after dark
In Fira, the cocktail bars are on the cliffside, and 2 Brothers keeps going until 5am.
PK Cocktail Bar
PK says it was Santorini's first cocktail bar: it began in 1976, cut into Fira's cliffside, and it's named after Palia Kameni, the volcanic island in the bay below. It's open all year, from noon to midnight when we checked; in winter only its middle level opens.
- Booking: summer bookings open a year ahead, against a deposit. PK says the deposit isn't a minimum spend, and you get back what you don't use. Same-day bookings are by WhatsApp, not online.
- Walk-ins: PK says it always keeps a place at the bar for walk-ins.
Tango
Tango Champagne & Cocktail Bar is on Fira's cliffside, facing the sea, the volcanoes and the sunset. Book through the form on its site. It was still putting on DJ nights at the start of October 2026, but it doesn't publish its hours or prices, so ask before you order.
2 Brothers
2 Brothers, in Fira, opened in March 1983, and it's where the night carries on: open daily from noon to 5am, with DJs every night from 10pm. You can reserve seating; a bar-hours booking (noon to 10pm) comes with a €14 credit per guest towards the bill.
Staying in Fira
Fira puts the cliffside bars and the late venue within walking distance, and Oia is a bus ride away: the KTEL bus is €2.20 for the 11.8 km run.
Imerovigli
Imerovigli is the caldera village just north of Fira, with Skaros Rock as its landmark. Santorini's official visitor site recommends a walk out to the rock and a visit to the church of Panagia Malteza.
The Athenian House sits on the caldera cliffs here: a restaurant on three terraces looking out to Skaros Rock, and the Evzon Bar.
- Restaurant: 6pm to midnight. It recommends booking, and takes walk-ins when it has room.
- Evzon Bar: from 6pm until 11pm or midnight. It takes no reservations.
- Season: 22 April to 25 October in 2026.
The black-sand side
The island's eastern shore is lined with black volcanic sand beaches: Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos. It's a different trip from the caldera, with the beach on your doorstep.
- Perivolos has beach bars: Wet Stories hosts DJ parties, and Seaside, between Perivolos and Agios Georgios, calls itself a beach and sunset lounge bar. Neither site had been updated for 2026 when we checked in October, so check they're open before you plan around them.
- Kamari has Cine Kamari, an open-air cinema showing films in English with Greek subtitles. Its 2026 season has ended; it reopens in May 2027.
Dinners worth booking
- Selene (Fira): in a former 18th-century Catholic monastery, now the Katikies Garden hotel. Since 2021 its kitchen has been run by chef Ettore Botrini, cooking degustation menus. Open 6.30pm to 12.30am, last orders 10pm.
- Lauda at Andronis Boutique Hotel (Oia): led by Emmanuel Renaut, the chef behind the three-Michelin-star Flocons de Sel, with Orestis Sotiriou as its new head chef. Dinner runs 7pm to 10.30pm, and it doesn't seat children under 13.
- 1800-Floga (Oia): in what its owners say was Oia's first traditional bakery, a renovated cave. Mediterranean cooking, open daily from noon to midnight, April to October. Book by phone.
- Metaxy Mas (Exo Gonia): a restaurant inland on the island's eastern slope, cooking Cretan and Santorinian food. There's no caldera view; book by phone.
Argo, which used to be in Fira, has moved inland to Kontochori as Argo Village by Constantin.
One evening, start to finish
- An hour or so before sunset: a drink on the cliffside at PK or Tango in Fira. PK's bar seats are kept for walk-ins.
- Sunset: dinner with the view, booked ahead: the Athenian House in Imerovigli, looking out to Skaros Rock, or Ammoudi Fish Tavern on the water below Oia (open 11am to 11pm, April to October).
- After dinner: back to Fira for 2 Brothers, where the DJs start at 10pm.
Getting around
The KTEL bus links Fira and Oia for €2.20 each way. Uber operates on Santorini too, with cars and vans from local operators, and you can book ahead with Uber Reserve. If you walk the caldera path from Imerovigli to Oia, start early in summer and carry water.
Questions
What time is sunset in Santorini?
It depends on the date: about 8.40pm at the start of July, 8.10pm in mid-August and 7pm at the end of September, by the US Naval Observatory's times for Oia.
Where can I watch the sunset in Santorini apart from Oia?
Imerovigli, looking out to Skaros Rock; Ammoudi Bay, about 300 steps below Oia; the Prophitis Ilias monastery, on the island's highest peak; the lighthouse at Akrotiri, the south-western tip; or a cliffside bar in Fira such as PK or Tango.
Does Santorini have nightlife?
Some. It's mostly bars, but in Fira 2 Brothers has DJs every night from 10pm to 5am. PK and Tango are the cliffside cocktail bars.
Do I need to book?
For dinner with a caldera view, yes. For drinks, not always: PK always keeps bar seats for walk-ins, and the Athenian House's Evzon Bar takes no reservations.
How do I get from Fira to Oia?
The KTEL bus is €2.20 for the 11.8 km run. Uber operates on the island too, including bookings ahead with Uber Reserve.
When is Santorini's season?
July and August are the peak. Many restaurants run from April to October: 1800-Floga in Oia opens April to October, and the Athenian House in Imerovigli ran 22 April to 25 October in 2026. PK in Fira is open all year.
What to skip
- Planning around an 8.30pm sunset in August or September. By mid-August it's about 8.10pm, and by the end of September about 7pm.
- Donkey and mule rides. The Donkey Sanctuary asks visitors to stop and think before taking them; walk instead.
- Assuming it's all open out of season. Plenty closes from November to March; check each venue's own dates.
One last thing
Santorini is at its best at a slower pace: a cliffside drink in Fira, dinner with the view, and a day inland in Pyrgos, the hillside village that has been a protected settlement since 1995.

Corrections
- : Re-checked against the venues’ own sites and rewritten. MoMix’s Santorini bar isn’t operating, so it’s removed, and so is Enigma, which we couldn’t confirm is still trading. 1800 in Oia is now 1800-Floga, in what was Oia’s first traditional bakery, not a sea captain’s house. Argo has moved from Fira to Kontochori. Uber does operate on Santorini. Sunset is about 8.40 PM in early July but about 7 PM by the end of September, so the guide now gives times by date rather than “8.30 PM”. Not every caldera view needs a booking: PK keeps bar seats for walk-ins, and the Athenian House’s Evzon Bar takes no reservations. PK closes at midnight, and 2 Brothers stays open until 5 AM. The Akrotiri lighthouse is at the south-western tip. July and August are the peak, not late May to October, and 35°C+ isn’t typical. Removed drink prices, taxi and ATV fares, the Fira–Oia path length, the winery count and the crowd comparisons, which we couldn’t confirm.
- : Lauda is at Andronis Boutique Hotel and runs under Michelin-starred chef Emmanuel Renaut; it doesn't hold a star of its own. Removed Selene's Mezes & Wine bar, which belonged to its old Pyrgos site. Replaced an invented crowd figure for Oia, and a claim about caldera-edge clubs.
- : Removed a first-person account of evenings on Santorini: the guide is research-led. Removed a closing line about booking the venues direct through the site, which Citorah doesn’t offer.
