Athens Nightlife Guide 2026: Gazi, Psyrri, Kolonaki & Beyond

Where to go out in Athens: Gazi's clubs, the cocktail bars around Monastiraki and Psyrri, the rooftops with an Acropolis view, and the summer clubs on the Riviera, area by area.

Checked Research-led

The short version

  • The areas: Gazi for clubs, the streets around Monastiraki and Psyrri for cocktail bars, Kolonaki for upmarket, and Exarcheia for alternative.
  • The cocktail bars are the headline. Three Athens bars made The World's 50 Best Bars 2026, with Line at No. 5.
  • The season flips the map. From May to late September the clubs are on the coast, on the Athens Riviera; the rest of the year they're in the city.
  • The metro runs until midnight, until 2am on Fridays and all night on Saturdays on lines 2 and 3.

Athens goes out late, and where it goes changes with the season. The city's official guide puts it simply: "Think seaside in the summer, underground in the winter." Here's the map, area by area.

Gazi: the clubs

Gazi, west of Monastiraki, is named after the old gasworks, now the Technopolis cultural centre. The official city guide treats Gazi and neighbouring Kerameikos as one area, and it's where the guide sends you for nightlife.

  • Bios, at Pireos 84 on the Gazi–Kerameikos edge: a multi-level arts space with a basement club and a rooftop, with club nights on its October 2026 programme.
  • Lohan Nightclub, at 32 Iera Odos: the big commercial club, open on Friday and Saturday nights (its About page adds Sunday).

Getting to Gazi and home again

Metro line 3 stops at Kerameikos, in Gazi. The metro runs from 5am to midnight, and lines 2 and 3 run until 2am on Fridays and all night on Saturdays. Taxis are metered yellow cabs: hail one, or book through Freenow (formerly Beat) or Uber, which in Athens sends a yellow taxi. Night rates are higher; the fixed airport fare, for example, is €40 by day and €55 from midnight to 5am.

Monastiraki and Psyrri: the cocktail bars

Psyrri, between Monastiraki and Omonia, was a district of artisan workshops until bars and restaurants took them over in the early 2000s; now it's narrow streets and street art. The cocktail bars cluster around it: The World's 50 Best Bars calls Monastiraki the current centre of the city's cocktail culture.

  • The Bar in Front of the Bar: No. 19 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2026, and that year's Highest Climber. Zero-waste cocktails, served out on the pavement in Monastiraki.
  • Barro Negro: No. 40 on the 2026 list. A tequila and agave bar in Monastiraki, opened in 2019.
  • Baba Au Rum (Klitiou 6): open daily from 7pm to 3am. It's No. 55 on the 2026 extended list (it was No. 27 in 2025), and a top-four nominee for Best International High Volume Bar at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.
  • The Clumsies (Praxitelous 30): an all-day bar, open from the morning, with The Room, a private space for up to ten with a fireplace, a billiard table and records. Book through its site or by phone. It was in The World's 50 Best Bars every year from 2015 to 2023, but isn't on the 2025 or 2026 lists.
  • Little Kook (Karaiskaki 17, Psyrri): a themed café that serves cocktails, open from 9am to midnight.
  • A for Athens: a rooftop bar right next to Monastiraki metro station, looking out to the Acropolis.

Baba Au Rum and The Clumsies are just east of Athinas Street, a few minutes' walk from Psyrri itself.

Line: the one to book

Line, in Kato Petralona (Agathodemonos 37), is No. 5 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2026 and won that year's Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award. It comes from Vasilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis, co-founders of The Clumsies, in a former art gallery. They ferment, redistil and bottle in house. Book on its website.

Kolonaki and Syntagma: upmarket

Kolonaki is still where, in the official guide's words, "moneyed Athenians go to shop and socialise".

  • Da Capo (Tsakalof 1, on Kolonaki Square): a classic coffee shop, known for people-watching over coffee.
  • GB Roof Garden: on the eighth floor of the Hotel Grande Bretagne, on Syntagma Square, a short walk from Kolonaki. Parliament is across the square below, and the Acropolis and the Parthenon are in view about 1 km away. Dinner runs from 5pm to 2am (last orders 11.45pm), and the dress code is smart-casual from 5pm.

Exarcheia: the alternative

Exarcheia has a reputation as the turf of anarchists and radicals, and it was the site of the 1973 student uprising that helped bring down Greece's dictatorship. The official guide sends you there for its cafés.

Exarcheia, Syntagma and demonstration days

The city's official safety page calls Athens "generally a very safe city". It also says to avoid Exarchia and Syntagma Squares on days when strikes or demonstrations are planned, as police occasionally use tear gas. It mentions open drug use around Omonia and Exarchia Squares and Keramikos-Metaxourgio, next to Gazi.

Thiseio, Plaka and Koukaki: the walk home

Thiseio, just west of Monastiraki, and Plaka, to its south-east, sit at the foot of the Acropolis. The pedestrian promenade around the Acropolis links them: a traffic ban in 2003 turned the stretch from Hadrian's Arch to Philopappou Hill from one of the city's busiest streets into, in the official guide's words, "its most charming promenade". Thiseio's cafés and bars along it look up to the Acropolis.

Koukaki, south-west of the Acropolis, has become one of Athens' most fashionable neighbourhoods since the Acropolis Museum and the walkway arrived. It's a good base, a walk from Thiseio.

Summer: the Riviera

From May to late September, the club nights move to the Athens Riviera, the coast south of the city. Outside rush hour, Glyfada is about 20 minutes' drive from Syntagma, and Vouliagmeni and Varkiza about 25.

  • Island (Varkiza, at the 27th km of Athens–Sounio Avenue): an open-air restaurant and club built down a cliff. The official guide says the earliest dinner slot is usually about 9.30–10pm, and its closing party is in mid-September.
  • Akanthus (Akti Alimou, Alimos): a seafront club, open Wednesday to Sunday "until the dawn" from the start of May to the end of September.
  • Balux in Glyfada is closed for renovation; check before you go.

Out of season the summer clubs close, though the official guide notes that a number of seaside restaurants and beach bars stay open all year.

A night out, in order

  1. Dinner in Psyrri or Koukaki.
  2. A cocktail around Monastiraki: The Bar in Front of the Bar, Barro Negro or Baba Au Rum. Or book Line.
  3. The clubs in Gazi: Bios, or Lohan on a Friday or Saturday. The official guide's advice: "don't even think about calling it a night before sunrise."
  4. Home on the metro: on Saturdays lines 2 and 3 run all night.

Tables and minimum spends

If a club offers you a table, ask the minimum spend before you sit down, and buy at the bar if you'd rather not commit.

What to skip

  • "Greek night" dinner shows sold as nightlife. They're a show for visitors, not a night out in the city.
  • Exarchia and Syntagma Squares on demonstration days. The official guide says to avoid them.
  • A Riviera club night outside May to September. The summer clubs will be closed.

Corrections

  • : Re-checked and rewritten. Our 6 October correction put Line in Kerameikos; it’s in Kato Petralona. The World’s 50 Best Bars 2026 lists Line (No. 5), The Bar in Front of the Bar (No. 19) and Barro Negro (No. 40); The Clumsies is no longer on it, and Baba Au Rum is No. 55 on the extended list. Baba Au Rum and The Clumsies are just east of Athinas Street, not in Psyrri, and The Clumsies is an all-day bar with a private room, not two bars. Below the GB Roof Garden is Syntagma, with Parliament across it; the Acropolis is about 1 km away. Da Capo is a coffee shop, not a bar. Thiseio is west of Monastiraki and Plaka south-east; neither is south. The Riviera season runs from May to late September. Balux is closed for renovation. Athens taxis are metered, so fares don’t surge. Exarcheia isn’t trouble-free: the city advises avoiding Exarchia and Syntagma Squares when strikes or demonstrations are planned. Removed Villa Mercedes, Blue Fox and Tailor Made, which we couldn’t confirm are open, and the door, drink and taxi prices and opening-time generalisations, which no venue or official source states.
  • : Six d.o.g.s closed in December 2024, and the Hilton's Galaxy Bar closed with the hotel in 2022 (it's due back with the Conrad that replaced it); both are removed. Removed Schoolpinters, The Guilty, Warpzone and Mo's Wine Bar, which we couldn't find, and Alphaville, which is in Metaxourgeio, not Exarcheia. Brettos is in Plaka, Line in Kerameikos rather than near Kolonaki, and Akanthus on Alimos beach, not in Glyfada. On lines 2 and 3 the metro runs until 2 AM on Fridays and all night on Saturdays. Beat is now Freenow. The Varkiza venue is called Island, and Thiseio's bars line a promenade, not a waterfront. [This entry put Line in Kerameikos, which was also wrong: it's in Kato Petralona. See 8 October.]
  • : Removed a first-person account of a night out in Athens in October 2022: the guide is research-led. Removed a quote credited to “an Athens bartender”, an unnamed source that couldn’t be checked, and a closing line about booking the venues direct through the site, which Citorah doesn’t offer.
